Road To Vladivostok

30th of November will be a special day for the fans of Robin And The Backstabbers as they will relase their new album, “Vladivostok”, the last of the trilogy “Bacovia Overdrive”.

One of the most popular bands in Romania at the moment, Robin and the Backstabbers began their journey in 2010 in a small village named Capu’ Corbului in Harghita County. Not so long after, they have won The Audience Award of Stufstock Newcomers 2010.

Two years later, the alternative rock band has released “Stalingrad”, the first album of the trilogy “Bacovia Overdrive”, which contains two of their most popular songs, “Sat dupa Sat” and “Vanatoarea Regala”.

What amazing songs will they release this time? We have talked with Robin, the vocalist of the band, about “Vladivostok” and the future plans of the band:

What inspired you to release the album?

The surprise of it – and allow me to explain. One morning, I was thinking of a specific song and how we should record it for the third album, when the time comes. And then I told myself “But it doesn’t fit!” and then I asked myself “Where exactly doesn’t it fit?”, and answered “Well, on the album?” “On what album?” and, suddenly, I realised that the time had indeed come, along with a well-defined empty space, haunted by an unmistakable spirit, and then I understood that the third album was already there and all we had to do was fill in the 40-minute-long empty space with some songs and whatnot.

Apart from that, there was the disappointment. We had given up on the idea of an album and had started coming out with single after single, like the ones you hear on the radio, which is wonderful, but – to spare you of details – I was disappointed to notice that it didn’t work, at least for us as a band. A group of 27 people who are all waiting for a greenlight at the crosswalk is something entirely different from a group of 27 people who all went into the sunset in search of a lost girl.

What’s your favourite song off the new album, and why?

As of now, my favourite song off the album is the one named “Înțeleg (Un şef înțelegător)”. I prefer it because it’s a perfect, beautiful, spotless song, as is untouched snow, as is payday, as is an uncrowded sub, calmly stopping at the station, ten seconds after you arrive on the platfrom. It is also preffered by Kanye, the Jack Russell at our studio, The Great Below.

What expectations do you have from the album-launching concert at Arenele Romane?

Exactly the same as the previous two album launches: I expect the third to remain in my mind as a beautiful memory for the rest of my life.

Will there be other upcoming concerts to promote the album?

Of course, but the idea of a concert existing only to promote the new album doesn’t really make sense to me. Any concert of ours promotes all of the albums that we’ve put out, in equal measure with “Vladivostok”; maybe, promoting our sound as a band, generally. But yes, I got your question, and, indeed – ships ahoy!

What expectations do you have regarding “Vladivostok”?

It’s all irrelevant now. What’s important is that I feel that this album had some expectations from me, and my best guess is that I haven’t let it down. It is a horrible sensation when you feel like the idea that chose you begins feeling disappointed with its choice, and it spirals into a sort of unhappy marriage – each time you speak, the other can’t be anything other than irritated.

But if I could request my album anything, I’d tell it something like this: be mindful of the way you present yourself, dude, make sure to be polite and respectful (but not a wimp, though), never tell a joke unless you’re going to tell a good one, and don’t treat others badly – it’d be a shame not to be seen as the cool guy that you are.

What plans do you have for 2020?

(rhyme translated as) “Love and forgive and be unafraid, and if you’re scared, it’s alright, it’s nothing at all.”

If it doesn’t make you dream or laugh (or at least make you rich for real, beyond the force of your imagination, well above what you believe to be possible right now), it isn’t worth it.

Ce v-a inspirat să lansați noul album?

Surpriza m-a inspirat. Dă-mi voie să explic. Mă gândeam într-o dimineață la un anumit cântec (știe el care e) și la cum ar trebui să îl înregistrăm pentru albumul al treilea, atunci când va veni vremea. Și mi-am zis ”Dar nu se potrivește!” și m-am întrebat ”Nu se potrivește unde?” și mi-am răspuns ”Păi cum unde, pe album!” ”Pe ce album?” și brusc mi-am dat seama, surprins, că da, vremea a venit și da, avem un spațiu gol bine definit în care plutește un duh imposibil de confundat cu altul și așa am înțeles că albumul trei era deja prezent și că noi trebuie doar să populăm spațiul gol a vreo 40 de minute cu cântece și mai știu eu ce.

De asemenea – dezamăgirea. Renunțaserăm la ideea de album și începuserăm să scoatem doar single după single la infinit, precum cei de la radio, ceea ce e minunat dar – te scutesc de detalii – am fost dezamăgit să observ că nu funcționează, pentru noi, cel puțin. Un grup de 27 de oameni care așteaptă împreună lumina verde a semaforului pentru a traversa strada este ceva cu totul și cu totul diferit de un grup de 27 de oameni care au plecat împreună la apus în căutarea unei fetițe dispărute.

Care este melodia dvs. preferată de pe noul album şi de ce?

În acest moment cântecul meu preferat de pe album este cel care se numește “Înțeleg (Un șef înțelegător)”. Este preferatul meu pentru că este un cântec perfect, frumos, fără de cusur, fără cazier, zăpadă neatinsă, zi de plată, metrou neaglomerat care oprește liniștit în stație la zece secunde după ce ai ajuns și tu pe peron. De asemenea, este preferatul lui Kanye, Jack Russellul de la studioul nostru, The Great Below.

Ce aşteptări aveți de la concertul de lansare de la Arenele Romane?

Exact ca în cazul primelor două concerte de lansare, mă aștept de la cel de-al treilea să îmi revină în minte cu drag tot restul vieții.

O să urmeze şi alte concerte de promovare a albumului?

O să urmeze cu siguranță, deși ideea de concert de promovare a unui album anume nu prea are sens în mintea mea. Orice concert pe care îl cântăm e un concert de promovare a tuturor albumelori în aceeași măsură cu a Vladivostokului. Și poate a unui sound general al unei formații. Dar da, înțeleg întrebarea și da – ahoi ahoi, iată vin corăbiile pe mare.

Ce aşteptări aveți de la “Vladivostok”?

Nu prea mai contează acum. Ce e important e că simt că acest album a avut anumite așteptări de la mine și intuiesc că nu l-am dezamăgit. E o senzație groaznică atunci când simți că ideea care te-a ales pe tine începe să fie dezamăgită de alegerea pe care a făcut-o. Când nu ești la înălțimea propriilor inepții și bâlbâieli și gângăvii. Și devine un fel de căsătorie nefericită – de fiecare dată când deschizi gura tot ceea ce faci e să îi oferi celuilalt prilej de iritare.

Dar dacă ar fi să îmi pot ruga albumul ceva i-aș spune cam așa: ai grijă cum te prezinți, bre, fii politicos și respectuos da nu blegoman, mai bine nu fă bancuri decât să faci bancuri slabe și nu fii de căcat cu oamenii – ar fi păcat să nu vadă lumea cât de mișto ești.

Ce planuri aveți pentru 2020?

”Iubește și iartă și fii fără frică și dacă ți-e frică, e OK, nu-i nimică”

Aveţi vreun mesaj pentru fanii Robin and the Backstabbers care citesc acest interviu?

Dacă nu te face să visezi sau să râzi (sau măcar să te îmbogățești pe bune pe bune, dincolo de puterile imaginației, mult peste ceea ce crezi acum cu putință) nu merită.
