The quarantine was a really hard period for bands and artist. We talked to some bands from all over the world to see the real effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic in music.

Today we talk to The Hellfreaks, the well-known female-fronted punk band from Hungary.

How can you describe the changes generated by the pandemic in the band’s activity?

It took us a while to get up from this shock. We released our 4th album in February, right when the first signals of the pandemic began in Hungary. We worked for 2 years intensively on this album and had many expectations for the release year, but we definitely did not see this coming.

It was out of the question that we had to change our plans: we started to focus heavily on online content creation. We started to share more of our lives and thoughts, recorded more music videos, started vlogging and still have some surprises for our fans that I can’t reveal right now. And of course we started to work on new songs. Which is a bit difficult as we just released a full album and normally we take some time before we head back to songwriting. Our fans know that very well: we like to reinvent ourselves for each new record and that is a bit tricky right now. But we take on the challenge!

What daily activity did you miss the most during quarantine?

Going to the gym. My wrecked spine is crying for it.

Were there any pluses for this period without concerts?

We’re in a very special situation: our fanbase is spread all over the world. Normally we mainly tour in Europe, that’s why many of our fans couldn’t see us live and won’t for a while, even when everything goes back to normal. The pandemic is a difficult situation but at least we can give our fans more Hellfreaks content than usual.
We also released music videos – like Doldrum Dynasty, that we released a week ago – that wasn’t planned to be released as a single. And there is more to come!

How does it feel to return to some normality?

I have no clue how it will feel! It’s just getting worse week by week in Hungary. We’re under lockdown, the positive covid numbers are rising. It’s not shiny at all.

What plans have you got for the rest of 2020 and for 2021?

Writing music and creating videos. AND we’re already recording a video for a new song as well!

Do you have any message for the bands or artists who are still in lockdown/quarantine?

We can feel your pain, as we’re in the same situation! 😀

What message do you have for the people who are going to read this interview?
